Being a sportswriter will take the fan out of you. Why? How about:
You’re paid to be professional, objective, and unbiased
Before games, the press box announcer reminds you that “there is no cheering in the press box”
You get a peek behind the curtain and it’s not always pretty
It’s important though, in my opinion, to not forget what it’s like to be a fan. Ultimately, I want people to read, enjoy, and learn from my stories. To achieve that goal, I must keep my finger on the fans’ pulse.
I think I do a decent job of that, and I hope I always will. I know plenty of veteran writers who are jaded and forget that sports are, ya know, fun.
ALL OF THAT is to say this: I remain a passionate fan of the New York Mets, and they are on an improbable, thrilling, unbelievable ride that has taken them from 11 games under .500 in June to the National League Championship Series.
And I mention that to say this: For many people, I am the only Mets fan they know. This is very fun for me. After their recent playoff wins, I’ve heard from various in-laws, friends, and frankly a couple of real randos. As they catch the game (or maybe just a highlight) at home or at a bar or wherever else, it’s cool to know they think of me. (This also happens with dinosaur-related content, which also warms my heart, but I’ve never lost my voice watching “Jurassic Park.”)
Anyway, I, and the 2024 New York Metropolitans, appreciate your support.
My latest content
Sooo, yeah, it’s been a while. The college football season was about to start when I last got in touch. I’ve written many stories since then. Some highlights:
I sat inside the Michigan football radio broadcast booth during a recent home game. I’d interviewed the two announcers beforehand, then got to observe them up close. It was a fun story to report and write.
After Michigan hosted Texas, I wrote about private planes that bring fans directly into Ann Arbor for games.
Michigan’s Sherrone Moore is the only former offensive lineman who is a head coach in the Big Ten. There’s only one former o-lineman coaching in the NFL. There’s no good reason why.
Thanks for sticking with me. Have a great weekend.
