A story that I’d been working on for a while published today: a profile on new Michigan men’s basketball head coach Dusty May.
I enjoyed learning more about his path to Michigan, which included growing up in rural Indiana, being a student manager at Indiana University under legendary coach Bob Knight, and various administrative and assistant coach jobs. He landed his first head-coaching gig at Florida Atlantic University in 2018 and improbably led FAU to the Final Four in 2023. He was hired at Michigan this spring.
For the story, I spoke to many of his former bosses and former teammates and close friends. I pulled from May’s various appearances on podcasts and other interviews — including a one-on-one chat I had with him earlier this month — old newspaper articles, and more.
